An account that is maintained by brokers to hold their customers’ funds separate from the funds of the brokerage firm. This helps separating and easily identifying both types of funds, especially in cases where brokers run into serious financial troubles (e.g., bankruptcy). Brokerage firms are required by law to maintain segregated accounts holding all client assets such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money market funds and cash.
