A futures contract in which one counterparty is obliged to deliver or receive an energy commodity (e.g., gas, fuel, etc.) at a certain price for a specified period of time. It differs from an energy swap in that in the latter no transfer of energy takes place, instead the counterparties exchange only the prices paid for energy. In other words, cash settlement rather than physical settlement is sought in such exchanges.
