A straight line that is drawn upward to the right across a chart along successive troughs (hence it is known as an up trendline) or downward to the right across a chart along successive peaks (therefore it is called a down trendline). Trendlines are the most instrumental tool in the study of market trends. Markets often rise or fall at a specific slope. It the trendline that helps chartists determine what this slope is.
