Arabic (العقود الأصلية) for principal contracts. Under shari’ah (Islamic law), principal contracts are contracts (uqud/ pl. of aqd) which exist by their own and independent of other contracts. These contracts do not require the existence of another contract (other contracts) as a perquisite for them to come into existence. Examples of al-uqud al-asliyyah include aqd al-ba’i (contract of sale), aqd al-ijarah (contract of lease), etc.
